City assisting hundreds of fire-affected people in Athlone, public urged to help

A devastating fire that occurred last night, 14 February 2021, at the Hadji Ebrahim informal settlement in Belgravia, Athlone, destroyed 31 wood and iron structures leaving 123 people displaced.

One adult male died tragically. The circumstances surrounding the incident is unknown and are being investigated.

City officials, including disaster management teams, were deployed to the scene, assist the fire victims. The City appeals to members of the public to assist the fire victims with social relief in the form of food parcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing and building material.
